The Broken Hill Greyhound Rescue Group is a new Greyhound Adoption Program. Located in the Far Western part of New South Wales. I have had much help from GAPSA in Adelaide and am glad for it. Starting a Greyhound Adoption Program here has been something I have wanted to do since I moved here 4 years ago from northern Minnesota, in the States. I have been involved with greyhounds sine 1995 and adopted my first in 1999. I started going to meet and greets shortly after and then I fostered. As back in the states and here I lived far away from the places that ran the adoption groups, but the greyhound breed had won my heart so it was worth the long drives. Sadly I had a work related injury that put a stop to my driving long distances so I had to give up fostering. But not my interest in helping promote this wonderful breed into becoming a household pet.
And now I have that opportunity to do this in Australia too. When I first visited here in 2003 and finding there was a Greyhound Track in town the idea began. I talked to my soon to be husband about my dream of helping the greyhounds here. Once here a year later I found out being so far away from the established adoption groups made it difficult to be included. That and with my health leaving me disabled I put my dream back on the shelf. Then a year ago I saw a spot on David and Kim on Channel 10 and it awoke my dream again. Again I was told Broken Hill was just too far away. I didn't give up this time. And I met Angela Webb who is now the Coordinator with GAPSA and she has helped me get to where I am today.
I run the program out of my home, and so far my group is myself, my hubby, and of course LiLi and Snowballs. I am looking for any other people interested in helping. I also need donations of dog food and old blankets or quilts for their bedding. Money donations are needed and welcomed. There is more I would love to be able to do for these greys, one is getting their teeth cleaned when they get de-sexed. That alone cost $175 that I can not afford. And greyhounds most often need this done to prevent tooth loss. Now I am asking for a $220 donation at the time of adoption, this includes the vet bills for de-sexing, a C5 shot, and heart worm check. I also include a muzzle, a new martingale collar and lead with tag, and they have been wormed. And an personal information packet on your greyhound along with on going support. This price is what other greyhound adoption groups are asking.
I have donated 2 books to the Broken Hill Library about adopting a Retired Racing Greyhound. I have the condition that you read at least one of them before the adoption of one of my greyhounds can be completed. The books are "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies: by Lee Livingood". 636.753. LIV. And "Adopting the Racing Greyhound: by Cynthia A. Branigan". 636.753. BRA. They are very informative books and you will learn much about what this wonderful breed of dog the greyhound is. And what a gentle and loving pet they make.
